Understanding The Presidential Travel Ban

On March 11, 2020, the President issued a 30-day travel ban, a measure intended to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus. The ban starts at 11:59 PM EST on March 13th, 2020. You can read the full decree here.

What you need to know about the presidential travel ban

Who is affected by the travel ban?

The 30-day travel ban prevents non-US nationals from traveling to the United States from the Schengen countries.

Exceptions include:

  • Travelers that are married to a US national
  • Immediate family of a US national

Which countries are included in the travel ban?

The presidential travel ban will prevent travel to the US from 26 European Union countries in the Schengen Area. The Schengen Area currently has the largest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases outside of China.

These countries include: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

The ban also includes any non-US nationals traveling into the United States that have been to one of the above countries within the last 14 days.

How does the travel ban affect US citizens returning from abroad?

This travel ban does not include residents of the United States, nor their spouses or immediate families.

So far, there is no indication that US citizens returning from a country in the Schengen Area will be placed into quarantine upon arrival.
